We are concerned, in light of recent media portrayals of events taking place at the All Candidates Meeting of October 30, that the truth is not necessarily what the powers that be would have you to believe. Precisely, Rogers Cable edited footage of the meeting. Fortunately, we have our own recording of the events, so we are not without ammunition. Still, we are concerned about the integrity of the process as a whole. After several complaints to Rogers Cable by myself and others, as well as threats of legal action, it would appear that Rogers has decided to play fair now. Today, Thursday November 2/2006 they were able to recover and air portions of the recording that were missing in broadcasts from the 2 previous days, of which we also have a copy. The October 30th All Candidates meeting was certainly anything but boring. It was interesting to observe from the audience how some senior staff members, clearly disturbed by some questions posed, reacted with insolence toward their challengers. It was obvious that some of these people had had prior contact with these members and were unsuccessful in their endeavor to find help. It was also obvious that the members were annoyed with the concerns of these citizens. While these hopeful candidates didn't garner any support from our corner they most certainly reminded us of the need to shake up our council of elected representatives. We need a change. A few of the candidates seemed unwilling to ban the use of non essential pesticides without further investigation regardless of the fact that research has already proven a direct link between pesticides and cancer. It seemed obvious to many people that one incumbent city councilor clearly read from her papers the answer to one of the questions provided by the sponsors that were not supposed to have been given to the candidates prior to the meeting. The answers were supposed to have been answered off the cuff. It just goes to show you that some of your presently elected officials lack confidence in their own abilities. One audience member took it upon himself to attack James personally due to the nature of his business, asking him what kind of person he is. This man was so rude that he had to be chastised by the speaker. Jim was quick to defend his position as the operator of a lucrative, bonafide business which operates within the confines of the law, and a fighter for human rights. Sponsored by the VON, James was also the recipient of the CCAC Heros in the Home Award this past month. More info about the attack can be found on Jim's Blog, my commentary can be found on the offending page of our web with a warning that it contains adult humour. Because so many candidates needed the opportunity to speak, candidates were told only minutes before the meeting began that they would have to cut their speeches from 3 minutes to 2 minutes, obviously reducing the effectiveness of everyone's speech.
