threat of religious weapon

Ingersoll Times — I
would think that the primary job of the supreme court would be to ensure the
rights of minorities are well protected.
Perhaps wearing a Kirpan to school isn’t so great, but, what about all the
people that drag crosses around with them, or rosary beads or anything
religious?
Perhaps banning ALL religious demonstrations in public would be the first
answer. If you want to practice this cultish behaviour, then you should do it at
home, or somewhere that will not disturb those of us that don’t wish to be a
part of the cult.
Perhaps removing the non-profit status of all religions would be another good
idea. I hate the thought that as an avowed atheist(I am a Darwinist)my taxes go
to pay for these religious cults through grants and tax relief programs, and
that churches are given tax free status at my expense is ridiculous.
In a country where church and state are separate by law, the issue of wearing
the Kirpan in a public school is entirely wrong and therefore I would agree that
there should be some prevention of this. But in terms of protecting minority
rights, the judges of the supreme court have performed their jobs well, and so
we must adhere to this principle of minority rights, before the rights of the
masses, lest we all be put down by the very same law.
As a Canadian parent of kids in school, I feel somewhat threatened by the
allowability to carry a religious weapon, but not to the point of banning this
person’s minority rights and freedoms.
There are hundreds of religions in Canada, and all are protected by the activist
supreme court. Many religions have asked for the government to curtail the
courts’ actions in order to change some laws, but they should be made aware
that the curtailing of these actions will only lead to the curtailing of their
own actions.
A lot of people forget it was that very same court that protected their right to
religious belief, now it’s time to let the courts protect the rest of us as
well.
