Sentinel Review March 18 2005

Name one death from pot use
Re: Grit convention more of a circus (editorial, March 9, Sentinel-Review).

S.H. Edward Woodstock
Friday March 18, 2005

I couldn’t help but notice two distinct perceptions on the same story. On the front page there was the Canadian Press reporting on the budget debate, as well as the Kyoto Accord, day care and gun control. Turning over a few pages to the editorial section reveals a completely different story in the eyes of the editorial writer. According to him, the entire weekend convention was circling around the marijuana debate.
This is contradictory to everything that I’d read or heard on the convention, via CTV newsnet, Toronto Star and local news coverage other than the Sentinel.
A comment made by the editorial writer was, ”Imagine what would be the result if government officials lowered the offence for any other illegal activity.”
I submit prohibition. This is the best case and point scenario, because of the close relationship alcohol shares with marijuana. Alcohol was an evil drug that was destroying the social fabric and must be dealt with. Some might have said impose taxes and regulations, providing a place in which it can be bought and drunk - a “licensed establishment” or a “blue light district.’’
But the editorial writer stated that by tripling the penalty for the offence, everything that will keep everything safe. Shift to the Prohibition - bootlegging, mafia shootouts and an alcohol black market.
When you have a faction of the government in place for monitoring the sale, taxation, and a workforce for the grow operations, you will have reduced the threat to the public at large. When there are “red light districts” that adults can go to, it eliminates the infringement on other parts of the community. When there are government grow houses that can produce not only jobs that we, as Canadians need right now, but textiles and oil sources to lighten the burden on our non-reusable fossil fuels, why would you close your mind? The facts have been stated before over and over again. Not one death related to marijuana.
